Colorful Cookies

by | Oct 27, 2020 | Creativity

You may want to print out this recipe and keep it handy as you bake.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 3⁄4 cups flour
  • Food coloring

Tools:

  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie sheet
  • Cookie cutters

How to Play:

  1. Mix butter and sugar in a bowl, then add the egg and vanilla extract.
  2. Separate the cookie dough into three balls, approximately the same size.
  3. Take one ball and mix in a few drops of yellow food coloring.
  4. Mix the red food coloring into the next ball, and mix the blue food coloring into the third.
  5. Roll out the cookie dough balls on a lightly floured board. If you want to combine colors, go for it!
  6. Cut out the cookies using a cookie cutter.
  7. Bake at 400 degrees for 7-10 minutes.
  8. The cookies should be light in color with light browning on the edges.
  9. Let them cool. Then, dig in!

How to Involve Your Child:

  • Let them explore kitchen items like pots, pans, and whisks while you bake.
  • Ask them to be your helper by giving you the food coloring, supplies, etc.
  • Give them some cookie dough to roll into small balls and flatten with their hands.
  • Needs supervision: put your hand over their hands to flatten the dough.
  • Build vocabulary by talking aloud about how the cookie dough looks and feels: blue, red, yellow, soft, squishy, round, flat, etc.
  • If you combine the colors, talk about the new colors you create when you mix.
  • Get their help serving the cookies to real (or stuffed animal) friends!
  • Don’t forget to wash up! Your little learner will love getting their hands a little wet.
